The long-term objective of Micro2Gen is to develop in collaboration with its strategic partners the All-in-One™, a Lab-on-Chip solution specialized in molecular diagnostics. The company already develops a flexible Point of Care (PoC) Instrumentation Solution to host All-in-One biochips. The instrument is an instantiation of the company’s Generic Instrumentation Toolbox, a prototyping solution to be marketed to the research community and instrument manufacturers. Selected components of this development may be used for different purposes and in other instruments or experimental setups, such as the multichannel potentiostat for the readout of electrochemical biosensors.

All-in-One Solution

All-in-One™ solution (Lab-On-Chip), will be a low cost integrated micro-system with modules for nucleic acid extraction, mixing steps, purification, PCR amplification, biochemical reactions, and biosensor detection in real time. The samples to be examined will be transported within and between modules via an enclosed micro fluidic channels system.

This microsystem will be supported by a portable and low cost point-of-care system that will be possible to be used even at doctor’s office, making DNA exams fast and easy. In parallel to the development of the micro-device, the company will be deploying its infrastructure to provide services to interested genetic laboratories, exploiting the know-how of its members and its infrastructure to the largest extend.

The All-in-oneTM biochip of Lab-On-a-Chip is an innovative product, which integrates three different processes that are currently performed in three different workstation of a diagnostic laboratory using complicated processes and/or expensive machines. Thre three processes performed on the biochip are the following a) DNA extraction, b) DNA amplification, and c) DNA hybridization and detection.

The diagnostic solution offered by the All-in-one LoC will be used for the following types of diagnostic tests:

Genetic tests. The targeted genetic tests are the following:

  1. Diagnosis of pathogenic mutations in the genes BRCA1 - BRCA2 and CHEK2, which significantly increase the possibility of breast and ovarian cancer.
  2. Breast cancer diagnostic test (Agendia’s MammaPrint test using Micro2Gen’s biochip) providing individual risk assessment leading to personalized therapy.
  3. Diagnosis of pathogenic mutations in the genes MLH1 and MSH2 (rectal cancer - colon and endometrium).
  4. Diagnosis of pathogenic mutations in the genes p16 (CDKN2A or INK4A) for the diagnosis of hereditary melanoma - pancreatic cancer.
  5. Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene on chromosome 7, which codes for the protein that controls ion transfer across cell membranes. Molecular analysis has identified approximately 100 mutations in the CFTR gene. Different mutations determine the severity of symptoms seen in CF patients.
  6. Thalassemia test, examining the most important mutations assuring 95% certainity for the result.

Pathogen detection and antibiotic resistance detection. It will be achieved through the use of bacterial biochip and resistance genes detection biochip. The biochip is a multi-analyte microarray Lab-on-Chip offering causative pathogen and anti-biotic drug resistance identification addressing the 100 most frequent bacteria that cause most of the clinically evident bacterial infections. Additionally anti-biotic resistance genes are identified to address resistances in 249 different antibiotics.

Apart from the provision of diagnostic services, Micro2Gen will offer biochips to its customers addressing various needs, i.e.:

  1. Spotted biochips for specific diagnostic tests
  2. Unspotted biochips (for research purposes) to research institutes and laboratories, where researchers will customize them to perform tests with specific genes.
